Outward Bound
Challenging wilderness adventure programmes will inspire student’s personal and social development.
The UWC and Outward Bound movements were both founded by Kurt Hahn and both organisations share the goal to develop young people and the values of compassion, greatness, responsibility, integrity and commitment to helping others.
NZ UWC Trust and Outward Bound New Zealand are committed to building a strong relationship that will see exceptional outdoor programmes as a key feature of the New Zealand UWC. Our Trust and Outward Bound New Zealand have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to support this outcome.
Using its location in the Wakatipu and the nearby Fiordland wilderness, NZ UWC will partner with Outward Bound to provide a full Outward Bound course for first-year students and the option of further wilderness based leadership development courses.
Our students will use this experience and training to help organise and lead school and youth camps as part of their service programme.
Students will also be encouraged to undertake advanced wilderness expeditions during their two years at the college.
This programme will develop students’:
- Self awareness, confidence and motivation – recognise their potential, develop resilience, understand and assume personal responsibility
- Increase their social awareness and communication skills – understand how to create effective relationships and experience success as a member of a team
- Consideration of their own, others and UWC’s values – develop skills to resolve values conflicts
- Experience education in, about and for the environment – become a guardian of the environment.
We anticipate Outward Bound may also use the UWC facilities as a satellite centre to provide courses within the southern region.
